Description: Written for a cast of 5 men and 6 women. It is strange that a careful and minutely descriptive portrait of human corruption could at the same time be a supremely honest revelation of one man's concept of the vast dimensions of God, yet that is what Thi$ God Bu$ine$$ has turned out to be. For ten years as a newspaperman, Mr. Chenoweth covered the tent-tabernacle circuit, the honest and the phony elements, and observed the system from all angles. When he writes, as he has in Thi$ God Bu$ine$$, of the heavenly sound of nickles and dimes pouring into the greedy hands of hypocrisy, he writes dialogue that sounds like real people because he has heard it on very real lips of very real people. It is ironic that , as he exposes the evil, he cannot help also exposing the good that survives it. Oh, it's quite true that he tears at organized religion in this play. He claws at it, and scars it, and maims it, and does his best to kill it. He shows it in its naked immorality, in its sacrilegious mockery, and in its merciless exploitation of Man's cry for meaning. But, when he gets all through - when Kate Denny and her bunch have done their worst, when John David falls back into his own excrement, and even when the victims finally know they have been bilked. the good that survives is still there. People believed. People gave of themselves and of their goods. People reached for something more than three meals a day, a bowel movement and a hasty grab at sex at night. For whatever cheap miserable dirty, rotten selfish reason - GOD was proclaimed. And God alone was still there when it was all over. And that is how we know Doral Park Chenoweth is not atheist, no matter what he calls himself. He made it plain with Thi$ God Bu$ine$$ that the only word that counts is the middle one.
