(5-15 half-title, introduction). 23 unnumbered leaves, 24 leaves of plates : chiefly illustrations. 23 cm. Pressed cloth over boards; gilt lettering to spine. Following the introdution, each of the 24 plates is accompanied by a facing leaf with appropriate descriptive letterpress. The plates are figures in outline from de Bry's engravings in copper from 1590. Book Condition: Good+ at least; perished at the spine ends, chipped along the remainder of the spine's length; covers unevenly toned and faded, corners worn, showing boards underneath on occasion; front hinge just starting; foxing to text block, (less so to the plates, which are for the most part in lovely condition). Three small, faint, library stamps, but spared the markings, the pockets, etc.. Binding is solid as a rock. Good+. Following the preface and introduction there is a second title page which spells out the incredible orgins of the the plates that follow: "Portraits to the life and manners of the inhabitants, of that province in America, called Virginia, in charge of the honourable gentleman, Sir Walter Raleigh, knight and steward of the stannaries in Cornwall and Exeter, by licence and authority granted in the year 1585, for the government of the new provinces, by the Most Serene Queen of England Elizabeth, the whole carefully executed and drawn to the life, by John Wyth, sent forth to that province in the years 1585 to 1588, afterwards engraved on copper, and originally published by Theofore De Bry, 1590."
