Description: “The Will and the Way: Paul R. Williams, Architect,” tells the story of the life and career of the first African American Fellow of the American Institute of Architects. Excellent/VG+ condition. The book is by a Williams grandchild, Karen E. Hudson, who is the director of the Paul Williams Architectural Archives. Hudson has written three books about her grandfather — Paul R. Williams: A Legacy of Style; The Will and the Way, a biography for children; and Paul R. Williams: Classic Hollywood Style. Paul Williams (1894-1980) designed more than 3,000 buildings from the 1920s to the 1970s. This trailblazing African American architect reshaped American design. Seen by millions, his LAX Theme Building is one of Williams’ most-noted works. He also designed homes, for Frank Sinatra, Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, and Barbara Stanwyck. With a career output of more than 3,000 projects, Williams blended modernism with the Hollywood Regency style of the mid-1900s, and created buildings that stand the test of time. This book is 9.5” x 8.3”; 64 pages including excellent photography, chronology and glossary. Likely a reviewer’s copy. This includes a one-page loose leaf insert with information from the publisher intended for a book reviewer. See photos. Purple boards embossed on spine with copper-colored title and name of author and publisher. Published 1994 by Rizzoli, New York. First edition. DJ like new, with corners of boards and DJ showing minor wear. No inscriptions, underlining, or stains on interior pages. Seems to be unread. Very good + copy. Excellent for any collector interested in African American history, architecture, Hollywood’s golden age, LA airport design, or other topics on 20th century American life. PLEASE SEE PHOTOS.
