Description: THE WAR OF THE REBELLIONby Theodore B. GatesFrontispiece____________________________Hardcover no dust jacket; 619 pages; Size Approx. 6 1/4 X 9 1/4.Published by P. F. McBreen; copyright 1884, first printing.Details: This is the regimental history of the "Ulster Guard" or the 20th New York State Militia, which reenlisted at the expiration of its three months service, and became the 80th New York Infantry. The unit fought throughout the war in the Army of the Potomac. The 80th New York Infantry was one of Fox's 300 Fighting Regiments. This book is the same as the author's "The Ulster Guard (20th N. Y. State Militia) and the War of the Rebellion" published a few years before in 1879. The title was shortened to just "The War of the Rebellion" and the new (1884) edition was illustrated. (Regrettably, this copy only has the frontispiece of the author, and is missing the other illustrations. But the full text is present. From the title page:A FULL AND CRITICAL HISTORY OF THE FIRST BATTLE OF BULL RUN; ORGANIZATION OF THE ARMY OF THE POTOMAC; MARCH TO AND RETURN FROM CENTREVILLE; EMBARKATION FOR THE PENINSULA; OPERATIONS OF THE FIRST ARMY CORPS; CAMPAIGN AND BATTLES OF THE ARMY OF VIRGINIA, UNDER POPE; MCCLELLAN'S MARYLAND CAMPAIGN AND THE BATTLES OF SOUTH MOUNTAIN AND ANTIETAM; BURNSIDE'S CAMPAIGN AND THE BATTLE OF FREDERICKSBURG; HOOKER'S CHANCELLORSVILLE CAMPAIGN AND SEDGWICK'S COĆPERATING OPERATIONS; GETTYSBURG CAMPAIGN, AND GRANT'S CAMPAIGN FROM THE RAPIDAN TO APPOMATTOX COURT-HOUSE.WITH A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE ORIGIN AND PROGRESS OF SECESSION; THE MILITARY CONDITION OF THE COUNTRY AT THE OUTBREAK OF THE WAR; ITS DEPENDENCE UPON THE MILITIA ORGANIZATIONS OF THE LOYAL STATES, AND, INCIDENTALLY, OF ORGANIZATION AND SERVICE OF THE "ULSTER GUARD," DURING THE WAR OF THE REBELLION.A great addition for your bookshelf!Condition: A little wear, corners bumped, some wear to the paste-on spine title label, name written several times in front and back, some page tears have been neatly repaired with a transparent non-yellowing mending film that is barely discernable, a few minor scattered marks noting a passage, otherwise in good condition with a solid binding and mostly clean pages. Note: The letter/number at the end of the title line for this listing is just an inventory code for locating the book. Free Domestic Economy Shipping! Be assured that we want your experience with Rivendell Antiquarian Books to be enjoyable and problem free. We believe that it is a travesty to simply throw away a used book when there is little or nothing wrong with it - we believe in giving each book the chance of finding a new home. We appreciate the impact a good book can have. We know the excitement of a new page turner, or the familiar joy of an old favorite, and we find satisfaction in putting older, and often scarce books in the hands of people who have the same love for old books that we do.Customer Service:Rivendell Antiquarian Books is committed to ensuring each customer is entirely satisfied with their puchase and our service. If you have any issues or concerns please contact us and we will be more than happy to help. Our books have been inspected carefully by hand by experienced book valuers to ensure the condition description is as accurate as possible for this exact copy pictured. If you have questions about the book before or after purchasing, please feel free to contact us!Packaging:We take pride in packaging our books for safe delivery, and if you check our feedback, you will see this reflected in the comments of many pleased customers. For nearly all of our books, we use a specially designed boxing system from IPS (Inovative Packaging Solutions) located in York, PA. These media shipping boxes are designed to conform to the size of the book, securing it and preventing it from bumping around during shipping. The end result is a box which provides a double thickness of cardboard covering the front and back of the book; actually almost like a box within a box. The outer layer of cardboard extends beyond the ends of the inner "box" which very efficiently protects the corners of the book from being bumped and damaged by the sometimes rough handling packages receive in transit. In addition we place the book in a plastic bag to help guard against moisture if a package is left out in the elements.Delivery:We aim to get all books shipped within 24 hours of order except on weekends. We can't control the delivery time once a book leaves our hands, but most of the time USPS is prompt in delivery, and the expected delivery time given by eBay is usually fairly accurate. Because we use media mail to keep costs down, it does take a little longer for delivery, and occasionally packages get delayed in the mail system. If for some reason your order has not arrived within the expected time frame, please get in contact with us so that we can try to help you.
