Description: This paper, The Van Buren Platform, or Facts for the present Supporters of Martin Van Buren, was apparently written during the Presidential Election Year 1848. Van Buren had won the Presidential Election of 1836, lost his re-election election in 1840, was not chosen as a candidate for re-election in 1844, and was an unsuccessful presidential candidate of the Free Soil Party in 1848. The Van Buren Platform paper, which measures approximately 5.75 x 8.5 inches, contains 8 pages of 2-column text describing why Martin Van Buren would be a poor choice for election to the Presidency in 1848. The text includes both character descriptions and multiple specific examples of Van Buren’s “negative” actions. The paper, which is string-bound, does not have any covers. The pages are very lightly tanned, with text that is clear and easily read. The overall condition of the paper is good. The illustrations accompanying this description show the first page of the text and a typical 2-page spread of Van Buren’s negative statements, Martin Van Buren (December 5, 1782 – July 24, 1862) was an American lawyer, diplomat, and statesman who served as the eighth president of the United States from 1837 to 1841. A primary founder of the Democratic Party, he served as New York’s attorney general and U.S. Senator, then briefly as the ninth governor of New York before joining Andrew Jackson’s administration as the tenth United States secretary of state, minister to Great Britain, and ultimately the eighth vice president when named Jackson's running mate for the 1832 election. Van Buren won the presidency in 1836against divided Whig opponents, the first president of non-Anglo-Saxon heritage and so far the only speaking English as a second language. Van Buren lost re-election in 1840, and failed to win the Democratic nomination in 1844. Later in his life, Van Buren emerged as an elder statesman and an important anti-slavery leader who led the Free Soil Party ticket in the 1848 presidential election. [Wikipedia]
