Lindsay White has updated the con game in this book and brought it into the new millenium. The premise, greedy corporate raiders who ultimately get their just rewards, would normally be a satisfying read. However White's characters, while all cast in their proper roles, were shallow at best. Not one of them was strong enough to be outstanding. Don't misunderstand, the characters have plenty of potential but seem lacking. I really wanted to further explore the relationship between Nick and Diane Griswold or between Alexander and Maria Elena. A subplot, the poisoning of American citizens by two Russian expatriots, could have become so much more instead of just a vehicle for murder and mayhem. A token to today's society was the billing of this as a terrorist plot. The entire subplot simply fizzled. As for the mechanics of the book, the print is made to appear as though it had just been pulled off of an old Smith-Corona typewriter and this considerably slowed down the pace of the reading.
