The Tale of the Lady Ochikubo: A Tenth Century Japanese Novel

Description: Condition Continued: There are no attachments of any kind. And no one has written their name or anything else anywhere. There are two appendices at the end of the book. You can see the dust jacket in the first three photos. I have rated its condition as Good. There are a few spots of soiling on the front cover. There is a 3/4" tear off the bottom edge at the juncture between the front cover and spine. And there is a 1/2" tear off the top edge of the rear cover alongside a thin crease. There is a vertical crease on the front cover just adjacent to its middle edge. The spine is toned. The flaps are in solid condition. There is a sliver of a stain along part of the outer edge of the rear flap. The jacket is NOT price-clipped, not clipped at all. I have it in a fitted protective cover. Stated 'First British Commonwealth edition 1970'. 'The novel was first translated into English in 1934 by Wilfred Whitehouse. A revised edition credited to Whitehouse and Eizo Yanagisawa was published in 1970.' So it's the first of this edition. The book is also known as Ochikubo Monogatari. 'The Tale of Ochikubo, is a story from the Heian period which is similar to the famous fairy tale Cinderella. Ochikubo Monogatari was written during the later part of the 10th century by an unknown author. It is known as the oldest surviving tale in Japanese literature to include harassment and bullying from a stepmother. Ochikubo Monogatari's well-formed plot and vivid description of characters influenced many writers such as Murasaki Shikibu, author of The Tale of Genji. The lively dialogues are also of particular quality.'
