"The Spirit Was Willing" Jack Gaughan Cosmos mag '77 Original art illustration

Description: I am listing a few special items from a private estate, some will be "buy it now" and others will be auction-type, running for a week . . . all are selected from my existing inventory at special sale prices, and have never been offered on eBay before. ORIGINAL ILLUSTRATION ART"SIZZLESTICK"ARTIST: JACK GAUGHANThis is a rare opportunity to own the original "paste-up" sheet for a double page spread containing an essay and original artwork by well-known illustrator Jack Gaughan, titled "The Spirit was Willing" (center section, page 38) in Cosmos Science Fiction Magazine issue for July 1977 (Vol 1, #2) Gaughan's essay described his early career and admiration for Will Eisner - who, at Gaughan's request, contributed a color centerfold for that issue. Back in the day, "paste-ups" were how magazines got printed: scans were made of identical sized sheets of heavy paper 13.5" x 19" (a size calculated to yield - after printing - double page sheets to trim and bind into a magazine of 11" x 8.5" size) to which the text and art was "pasted" (glued) down. Here, we have pasteup art in black-and-white by Gaughan that when published became blue through the magic of printing - see photos! Gaughan was the Art Director for the magazine and contributed many images to the issues, and of course came up with the concepts.... This is a unique piece of science fiction literary history, from a publication period never to be seen again - a collector's item for sure, because items like this were rarely saved.
