Title page printed in red and blue. George Cruikshank Frontis engraving with tissue guard along with three additional full page engravings. Condition: A Christmas gift inscription dated Dec. 25th - 49 on the front free endpaper. Wear to the edges, corners bumped and the spine was replaced at some point with the original cloth backstrip laid down. Fraying to the spine ends and a cut in the cloth to the spine. Some toning and foxing to the endpapers, preliminary and end pages with a small stain to the outside edge of the first few preliminary pages. Overall a very good copy of the first U.S. edition. Catherine Grace Frances Gore (née Moody; 12 February 1798 – 29 January 1861),[1] a prolific English novelist and dramatist. Between 1824 and 1862 she produced about 70 works, the most successful of which were novels of fashionable English life. Gore's 1861 obituary in The Times concluded that Gore was "the best novel writer of her class and the wittiest woman of her age."
