The Secret Doctrine Vol 1 1893 HP Blavatsky Cosmogenesis Third Revised Rare

Description: Offered here is a unique and scarce copy of "The Secret Doctrine The Synthesis of Science Religion and Philosophy by H.P. Blavatsky," Third and Revised Edition Vol. 1, Cosmogenesis, 1893, published by The Theosophy Society. This book was the personal copy of influential Chicago educator Josephine Carson Locke (1851-1919). She was also a friend of Swami Vivekananda, a key figure in introducing Yoga to the West and an influential philosopher, religious teacher, and author. You can read more about their association here: https://vivekanandaabroad.blogspot.com/2017/10/chicago-il-2-16-january-1895.html Front cover is in good shape with some wear and has decorative Theosophy Society stamps, spine in good condition with wear to paste-on labels. Corners bumped front and back cover. First two endpapers are loose but present (and annotated, see below). Interior hinges at both front and back cover interiors show wear but are holding well. Inside cover has In Memorium sticker and a pasted newspaper quote which has left a shadow on first end page. First end paper has Josephine Locke's signature and date of "March 3rd, 1912, Boston, Mass." Interior pages are bright and supple with no foxing (I didn't see any). However, at three locations in the book, someone (perhaps the actor Bert Lahr, see below) has inserted newspaper articles which have left shadows on pages. Please see photos. I will include the articles (out of the book of course) with the purchase. There are also several note pages inserted throughout in Ms. Locke's hand that I will also include and they will be left where they are as they haven't damaged anything and may relate to those pages specifically. The book is annotated throughout by Josephine Locke, including title dedication and title pages. Please see photos. Annotations become less frequent as book goes on. A rare opportunity to acquire this scarce volume. Side note: This volume was once in the library of actor Bert Lahr, the Cowardly Lion in The Wizard of Oz, though there are no indications of that in the book.
