Description: “ Universe” painted by Kim was sold for $ 13 Million at Christies in Hong Kong in 2019. Sold for US$ 5.74 million at K Auction on April 12, 2017, at the art show "Tranquility 5-IV-73 #310" in Seoul, becoming the highest priced South Korean artwork ever sold. Art curators say that it is the only matter of time that the price of his works will go up to at least 100 million dollars soon. Whanki Kim is called Korean Picasso and is a pioneer of Korean abstract painter best known for his softly colored abstractions. Kim merged traditional Korean subject matter with a Western style influenced by Fernand Léger and Mark Rothko. Before he established a unique monochromatic abstract painting, he explored several aesthetic genres as if Picasso revolutionized his artistic methods and subject matters from realism to cubism. The work, “ Roses” was created by him in 1945 to depict the “ Joy” of Independence from Japan. The red rose flowers represent his delight and the dark background symbolizes the gloomy period under Japanese oppression. He illustrated the joy of Independence as the beauty of roses blooming out of the dark background. Not only is he a pioneer of a new wave of abstract art, but he is also patriotic. Artist: Kim, WhanKiTitle: RosesSize: 44.5 x 36.8 cmYear: 1945Medium: Oil on wood panel Signed on the lower right About the Painting Created in 1945, at the time of the Korean liberation from Japan, "Roses" is WhanKi Kim's only representational still life work and one of his most valuable and prized works, as well as serving as a major influence in Korean art history. Using sophisticated brush strokes, he portrayed six rose flowers in a vase with a grip. The red, pink and white roses in the painting represents newfound hope following Korea's independence while the black background symbolizes the dismal hardships they faced during the Japanese occupation period. These two elements visualized the Korean will and sentiment and the joy they felt following their independence. About the Artist WhanKi Kim (1913 - 1974), Born in Sinan County, South Korea, is one of the most influential figures in modern Korean art. He began his career at Japan Art University, studying abstract art, and expressed early interest in European modernist painters, such as Pablo Picasso, Fernard Leger, and Mark Rothko. Kim?s "When Larks Sang" (1935) depicts a woman holding a basket on top her head, and its fragmented, geometrical shapes shows its influence from cubism. "Rondo" (1938), composed of flat planes of color, established Kim as a pioneer of abstract art in Korea and was featured in the Association of Free Artist Exhibition in Tokyo. He returned to Korean in 1937, during the time of the Korean civil war. He taught at Seoul National University?s art department and Hong-ik University Art School in the 50s.In the 1950s, while living in Paris, Kim experimented with the effects of figuration and abstraction by combining them with traditional Korean subjects such as the mountains, plum blossoms, and Joseon dynasty porcelains. In 1963, he moved to New York and began working on a series of large-scale, abstract paintings composed of dots and lines. Many of his works during this period were untitled or titled by date of completion. One of his few named titles, such as "Sounds of the Night" (1965), suggests mystical and temporal ideas which Kim tried to convey through abstraction. His artworks have been exhibited internationally, including in New York (1963 - 1974) and Paris (1956 - 1959), where he displayed unique Korean beauty combined with Eastern intuition and Western rationality through his works. Currently, the majority of his artworks are displayed at the WhanKi Museum in Seoul, Korea.
