This edition focuses on wartime events and conditions. "Since its first publication in Australia in 1932, Robson's Handbook has been a standard manual on the islands of the Pacific. Geographical, economic, and political description has been its basic element, supplemented, however, with historical commentary and anecdotes and with considerable data on such matters as health problems and the control of tropical disease. The present edition embodies numerous revisions, is enriched with additional maps, and also contains many references to developments in the course of the present war. Organization is in terms of five great island groupings: Polynesia, Micronesia, Melanesia, Indonesia, and the nontropical islands of the North and South Pacific. Each of these is broken down into convenient and conventional parts such as the Line Islands, the Bonins, and the Solomons. Space is apportioned more or less in proportion to the current and historical significance of the islands, but with purposeful slighting of the more familiar areas and with a measure of preference for the islands of the central and southwestern Pacific. Thus the Tonga (Friendly) Islands come in for longer description than the combination of Hawaii, Midway, Wake, and Johnston; there is more detail on French Oceania than on the Netherlands Indies; and more pages are allotted to Fiji than to the Philippines.
