Description: This DVD release tells the story of the University of Kansas Medical Center's nurses of the 77th Evacuation Hospital during World War II. This disc is sealed in brand new condition, with the following write-up on back: This video was developed to honor the nurses of the 77th Evacuation Hospital, sponsored by the University of Kansas Medical Center in World War 2. Five of the nurses were interviewed about their experiences with that medical unit. They were stationed in England, North Africa, Italy, France, Belgium and Germany. They entered France 30 days after D-Day and worked their way across Europe where they were intensely involved in the Battle of the Bulge, admitting 1000 soldiers a day during that battle. They were away from their families for 3 1/2 years. The nurses provided optimal care to their soldiers. They cared for their wounds and comforted them in their last hours. The nurses had not been prepared for this and so had to approach these new circumstances with professional creativity. Most of the nurses were from Kansas where they had learned that something worth doing was not always easy but worth doing right. They made sacrifices, mentally and physically, to make sure that their patients were well cared for and comfortable. They tell stories that makes the viewer live the times with them. There is actual footage and still pictures included that show the nurses and doctors working as a team in tents that housed surgery and patient wards. The video will also show the living quarters and the daily life of the nurses. A special thanks to the Department of History and Philosophy of Medicine and LightLyre Films for their participation in this project. Also a special thanks to all the nurses that served our country in the armed services in World War 2 and in every conflict since. The nurses put their lives in peril so that the soldiers can be cared for and come home to their families. As one nurse stated "We went because we knew we were needed."
