About Monotype (from the Index/catalog)Monotype, a unique company in today's software business Monotype's reputation for original quality typefaces spans nearly a century. Monotype was born when the American Tolbert Lanston invented the revolutionary Monotype typesetting machine. Lanston's invention was a technological innovation. Instead of casting an entire line of type as one metal slug, the Monotype type-caster set fully composed lines of individual types. This allowed typographic refinements such as kerning and minute adjustments to inter-character spacing which were impossible to achieve with line casting machines. Production of typefaces began in England in 1900 and it was not long before Monotype became a world- renowned source for quality type. In 1922 Stanley Morison, typographic advisor to Monotype. proposed a program of typographical design, rational, systematic and corresponding effectively with the foreseeable needs of printing'. The Monotype Typeface Library was born. Legends such as Times New Roman, the original 'Times' typeface designed for the British newspaper; Arial - now one of the world's most widely used fonts as supplied with Microsoft's Windows 3.1 operating system, and Gill Sans, designed by the eccentric and gifted English designer Eric Gill, have ensured that the Monotype Typeface Library today remains the most coveted among typesetters and designers worldwide. Today the tradition of quality and innovation progresses with a continuous stream of new typefaces from our design studios in England and Palo Alto, California.
