Black cloth covered boards with gilt lettering and illustrations on spine. Front board panels have narrow ruled borders at the edges. Upper external page edges are gilt. This set was printed for subscribers only and limited to one thousand numbered set of which this set is 280. The end paper illustrations are taken from a fifteenth century woodcut map of Venice - reproduced on each book in four sections, of which sections one and two appear in the front and back of the odd-numbered volumes, and sections three and four in the even-numbered volumes. All volumes have a Norman Rockwell drawing frontispiece followed by a tissue with red-lettered description. Condition:Overall in good condition. There is wear on top and bottom of spines and book edges. In v.1 the spine has come apart from the binding. In v. III and VII there is moderate separation of spine as well. See pictures for details.
