Text description beneath the picture (subject to any spelling errors due to the OCR program used) THE MANSION HOUSE AND CHEAPSIDE. Cheapside is probably the most densely-thronged street in London, and one of the most ancient, under its former name of "The Chepe," in London story. Part of the traffic has lately been diverted to Cannon Street and the Embankment by Queen Victoria Street, the commencement of which is seen on the left hand next to the Mansion House; but the throng of passengers and vehicles seems to suffer no abatement. Of the Mansion House the first stone was laid by Lord Mayor Perry in 1739 and the first Lord Mayor to reside in it was Sir Crisp Gascoigne in 1753. The most celebrated apartment in it is the so-called Egyptian Hall, a noble banquet-room which can dine 400 guests. In the distance will be seen the tower and spire of Bowchurch, whose name is so well known in connection with cockney London.
