Description: The Mamo Murders by Juanita Sheridan. Doubleday and Company, Crime Club. 1952. True first edition (one of the rare titles where a book club edition IS the true first edition.) DJ has small chip bottom of back shown in photos. Otherwise minor shelf/storage wear to edges and spine. Moderate toning to DJ, more evident when seeing the blank side. Sleeved in archival mylar. Book itself has slight warp and similar toning to pastedowns, endpapers and page edges. Minor wear to edges of boards and corners. Slight warp to book. No obvious internal markings. An excellent copy of an extremely rare, obscure, sought-after after title with unique themes, characters and setting. More info: Juanita Sheridan was one of many mystery writers in the 1940s and 1950s. It was tough to stand out for anyone. Despite some popularity, like many in the mass of mystery writers of the period, she was largely forgotten until somewhat lately. The most comprehensive article I found in my rabbit trail of research was Eric Redmans article on Crime Reads. Redman writes: Four of Sheridans books feature her Chinese American amateur detective Lily Wu and also Janice Cameron, who serves as Lilys sidekick and Sheridans narrator. The first volume,The Chinese Chop(1949),is set in New York, immediately after the Second World War. Its the book in which Lily and Janice, two young women who happen to hail from Hawaii, meet for the first time. Janice is the white roommate Lily needs in order to secure a room in Washington Square; at the time no one there would rent to the Chinese, even a Chinese-American like Lily. Sheridan entered adulthood during the Golden Age of Detective Fiction in the 1920s and 1930s, when female sleuths tended to be inoffensive older white women such as Agatha Christies Miss Marple. Yet Lily Wu is the precise opposite: a forceful young Chinese-American woman prepared to use her fists and feet and any other weapon available along with her exceptionally shrewd mind not just to defeat evildoers but to clobber them. Seriously, the article and the book are fascinating, so give Crimereads and Redman a read. The 1952 printing of this book is exceedingly rare. As far as my research can tell, it is the only copy presently available. SHIPPING Free priority mail shipping in a rigid cardboard box with all seams sealed with packing tape.
