Description: Gorgeous definitive 19th century biography of Michelangelo from the legendary Italian art historian. This first edition sold out in just 3 months. There is also a U.S. edition but this is indeed the British edition. Rare in such good condition. Moderate foxing on the outer pages. Clean inside. The large fold out of the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel was the first of its kind. There is a small tear expertly repaired on the back. Top edge gilt is darkened as usual other edges uncut. Green boards are remarkably clean. PO signature and date of “1892” at top right corner of title pages. No other writing or marks. Spine is clean and not faded — gilt spine titles are bright. I have two copies so giving this away but hope it finds a serious collector.
