On the night of July 4, 1776, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, Robert Livingston and Roger Sherman took a handwritten copy of the Declaration of Independence to the nearby printshop of John Dunlap, where it was hurriedly set into type and dispatched to the 13 colonies and troops in the field. In 1976 the Library of Congress commissioned a study of the printed documents in celebration of the nation's Bicentennial. Historian Frederick R. Goff examined all 21 copies known then (since increased to 26) and examined the paper, watermarks and type used in the first printing of the Declaration. This extraordinary volume has full-page (10x13) photos of each copy of the Declaration and a color portrait of the brave colonial printer tipped-in as frontispiece. Shipping weight is 2 pounds.
