The volume is complete with all of the regular issues but it does not include any of the Supplements (some of which consisted of colored illustrations or folding plates). The Illustrated London News appeared first on Saturday 14 May 1842, as the world's first illustrated weekly news magazine. Founded by Herbert Ingram, it appeared weekly until 1971, then less frequently thereafter, and ceased publication in 2003. The company continues today as Illustrated London News Ltd, a publishing, content and digital agency in London, which holds the publication and business archives of the magazine. The January to June volume includes many fine wood block engravings, including those of colonial India: Duke of Edinburgh at Government House, Calcutta; Tiger Hunting party; Government House at Bombay; Palace at Bhurtpore; Fort Church and barracks at Calcutta; The Hill Tribes Near Peshawar. China engravings include: the Sin Nanzing, new China Clipper; Scene on the Upper Yang-Tze, China. Hong Kong engravings include: The Landing of the Prince at Hong Kong; The Hong Kong Club illuminated. The volume Includes 'Sketches of Ireland', a series of illustrations of the Irish poor, showing Victorian anti-Irish sentiment with all of the adults depicted in derogatory fashion, dressed in rags & many barefoot, with the pronounced lower jaws thought by phrenologists of the day to indicate degeneracy. These illustrations include: interior of mud hut and cottagers at Kildare; inhabitants of a bog village; funeral in Connemara; and pig fair County Meath. It Includes full page portraits of famous men: seated portrait of Charles Dickens and Newton "Investigating Light", CONDITION: The volume is complete but does not include the color Supplements. Good Covers and Very Good Contents. (Cloth on covers is soiled and has some stains, leather has wear at corners and at spine ends with some loss; rubbing at joints. Contents are complete with some wear, spotting and closed tears of the blank endpapers, light soil of the title page, occasional light foxing or spotting, One leaf (p. 391/2) has tape repair at gutter margin and some wear at the margins with no loss of text or to illustration.
