Description: THE GARDEN OF ALLAH 1904 Edition. Robert Hichens, Grosset & Dunlap 482 pages. RARE SEAMEN'S FRIEND SOCIETY COPY. This book is in good condition for its age. The boards are not warped. The covers are not stained but are aged. The corners show some wear and are slightly bent. The spine is tanned and shows some fraying on top and bottom edges. The pages are aged but are still strong and flexible, with no creases, rips, tears, or writing. The only missing page is the copyright page. The binding is slightly loose but still intact. There is a handwritten inscription on the page opposite the inside cover; "With best wishes of....." What is remarkable about this book is that it is a copy from the AMERICAN SEAMEN'S FRIEND SOCIETY. This organization started in 1826 with the goal "To improve the social and moral conditions of seamen." The society did numerous things for merchant marine seamen, including a rest home and books donated to ships for seamen to read. They also gave financial, social, and spiritual support. They were based in New York City. The society went out of existence in 1986. This book is a part of American history. PLEASE SEE PHOTOS. BT 1/1
