Description: An illustrated collection of creatures from British folklore, each with related text from old poetry, Shakespeare and other sources. Cecily Peele, also known as Beatrice Cecilia Peele, was an artist and craftswoman who lived in Oxford during the early to mid-20th century. She co-founded the Alley Workshops at 65a St Giles, Oxford, with her friend Sally in the early 1920s. They produced a range of handcrafted items, toys, jewellery, pottery, prints and scarves. Peele served as an air raid warden and a Red Cross auxiliary during World War II while continuing her craftwork. She was said to be known for her eccentricities, which supposedly included walking her pet goat on a leash. Oxford: The Alley Workshops, 1939. First edition. Hardcover. 24 black and white illustrations by Cecilly Peele. Original cloth with red dragon illustration and titles lettered in black, two stains to the boards top half darkened, light foxing throughout though plates remain clean. A very good copy.
