Description: Dorothea Tanning: Early Designs for the Stage is an exhibition of approximately twenty hand-drawn ballet costume designs by Dorothea Tanning created in collaboration with the early modernist choreographer, George Balanchine. The accompanying publication features designs shown together for the first time, dating from 1945–1953, as well as archival photographs and ephemera related to the staged productions. This discrete body of work by Tanning explores the dynamic intersections of dance, performance, visual art, and costume, while drawing important parallels to the artist’s early discoveries in both painting and sculpture.
