Description: THE DIARY OF ETHEL H. RUDKIN PART TWO 1931. Published by Old Chapel Lane Books, Burgh le Marsh, Lincolnshire 2012, 90 pages, app, 50 illustrations. This second part of Mrs Rudkin's diary contains only one year as she was writing a great deal in the diary at this point. It contains more folklore than the previous volume and more visiting often in the company of the archaeologist A. L. Armstrong shown in the second picture. She was also still helping C. W. Phillips with revising the andcient monuments for the Ordnance Survey Maps. There is a series of photogrpahs which Phillips sent her of long barrows and all of his letters to her are included. Her own visits included Scredington where she talked to and old lady Mrs Carter who still dressed in traditional Lincolnshire Victorian style and could neither read nor write. She is shown in the third picture. There is an account of a visit to the deserted village of Gainsthorpe near Hibaldstow with photographs, Byard's Leap again with photographs, Thornholme Priory with pictures of the lost farmhouse built out of the remains. The several accounts of witches from the memory of old people and finally several trips to healing wells and springs in north Lincolnshire, which still had rags hanging on the bushes as tokens of the bandages from cures. This is another volume of a remarkable account of Lincolnshire by a remarkable observer and collector of the area. Robert Pacey, Burgh le Marsh, Christmas 2011
