Description: The Dialogues of Luisa Sigea is a translation of a significant seventeenth-century libertine fiction written in Latin, Aloisiae Sigeae Toletanae Satyra Sotadica de arcanis Amoris et Veneris, which was first published c. 1660. It is a whore dialogue – a once popular genre in which an older woman instructs a younger woman in sexual matters. In six dialogues, Tullia, who is 26, initiates her 15 year old cousin, Ottavia, in the art of sexual pleasure. The first four dialogues, which are fairly short, focus on tribadism and defloration. The longer fifth and six dialogues introduce flagellation, contractual submission, group sex, and anal sex. Like many sexual fictions, The Dialogues of Luisa Sigea attempts to conceal the identity of its it purports to be based on a Latin manuscript translation of a work written originally in Spanish in the sixteenth-century by an erudite young woman, Luisa Sigea of Toledo. In fact, it was written by a seventeenth-century Frenchman, Nicolas Chorier (1612-1692), a lawyer who wrote works on various historical and philosophical subjects. The first French translation, L’Academie des dames, was issued in the 1680, with a significantly abridged English translation, A Dialogue between a married lady and a Maid, appearing c. 1682. In 1684, William Cademan or Cadman was prosecuted for publishing the latter work. This Birchgrove Press edition is based on an English translation issued by Isidore Liseux in Paris in 1890. It comprises the six dialogues of the original Latin edition and includes Liseux’s informative editorial notes. With compelling argument, Liseux omits the fragmentary seventh dialogue that was added in 1678.
