I grew up in the same county in Washington state where the whimsical artwork comes to life under the hands of artists Robin and John Gumaelius. They incorporate steel, ceramic, and wood to create animated human and birdlike sculptures. Robin creates all the colorful ceramic surface imagery and complex decorative glazes, and then John takes over and adds the exquisite metal armatures that bring the sculptures to life. In a highly unusual working relationship, Robin and John combine their skills and imaginations together as an artistic team to build a singularly unusual world out of clay, metal and wood carving. This piece is made from ceramic clay and steel. With a smorgasbord of different colors (Maroon, brown, blue, cream, yellow, green, and black) It looks to be an earlier piece, because their newer sculptures tend to be light blue and white.
