The Cortenay Treasure Percival Christopher Wren 1st American ed. 1936 HBk VG

Description: The Cortenay Treasure By Percival Christopher Wren Houghton Mifflin Company, The Riverside Press Cambridge, Mass. 1936 Published at the same time in England by John Murray under the title Bubble Reputation. [4], 296 p.; 19.5 cm. (7.5 inches). Bluish-green cloth over spine and boards, with black-printed spine and front-cover titles. No dust jacket. Deckled fore-edges. Previous owner wrote date and price for which he paid for the book almost 30 years ago on the front fixed endpaper. First American Edition "Old Mr. Mompett was in a bad way. The doctor told Mrs. Mompett so quite plainly, and Mrs. Mompett, who had a poor opinion of Mr. Mompett, told him so every more plainly. And Something Else told him so most plainly of all. 'It's me chubes,' he said. 'Though what chubes has to do with a broken leg, I don't know.' And indeed the connection between bronchial tubes and the femur bone of the thigh is perhaps far to seek. On the other hand, there undoubtedly is a connection between alcoholism and a morbid condition of the lungs, and Mr. Mompett had a very fine taste indeed in old port, ancient brandy, good whisky, and indeed any other form of liquor that came under the heading of what he termed 'good stuff'" [opening lines of the book] Percival Christopher Wren (1875-1941), London-born novelist, graduated from West Kent School and then,as a non-collegiate student at Oxford, he obtained a B.A. in 1898. In 1903 he joined the Indian educational service and from that year until 1917 held several administrative positions in India. From December 1914 to October 1915 he served in the Poona Volunteer Rifles as a Captain, although from February to October 1915 was on sick leave. Allegedly, he then joined the French Foreign Legion at the age of 42 for a five-year tour, but most likely he met numerous legionnaires while he traveled in Algeria and Morocco and also did extensive research on the Legion. There is no firm evidence that he ever served in the Legion. On his return to England he concentrated on writing. A prolific author with more than 40 books published, he is perhaps best known for Beau Geste, which was immortalized by Paramount Films in 1939 when William A. Wellman directed an All-Star cast that included Gary Cooper, Ray Milland, Robert Preston, Brian Donlevy, Susan Hayward, J. Carrol Naish, Albert Dekker, and Broderick Crawford in one of the great Hollywood adventure films. Book is in Very Good Condition: as noted, former owner wrote date and price for which he purchased the book on front fixed endpaper; otherwise, all pages are clean, tight, and unmarked; about five leaves with upper right-corner crease, not impacting the text. Spine sunned. Nice copy of a rare book!
