Description: "...That I May Know Myself..." - A Memoir written in search for Selfby Anne Lawrence No Place: No Publisher, No date. Spiral bound wraps. ORIGINAL UNPUBLISHED MANUSCRIPT. This is a 171p xerox copy of a typewritten manuscript, bound in a plastic spiral comb binder. The pages are corrected throughout in pencil - the corrections are grammatical/spelling errors. Overall in very good condition. Item #1263620 Anne P. Lawrence (1936-2011) was born in Germany, moved to the United States in 1954, and lived the remainder of her life in the Buffalo NY area. This is a memoir of growing up in Stuttgart during WWII and the American post-war occupation. Lawrence attended a Catholic girl's school and much of the memoir deals with her school memories, friends, and later the various boys she met. The war is mainly a backdrop to her story, although it contains interesting passages such as her first meeting with a Black American serviceman - she was pleasantly surprised to realize how nice he was, not at all like the "primitive" "weak" image she had been taught to expect. The memoir also deals with the gradual growth of her Catholic faith; this manuscript came from the estate of a priest who presumably was the one who made the corrections.
