When he develops a crush on Betsy, a worker on the presidential nomination campaign of Senator Charles Palantine, her rejection unbalances him and leads to acts of shocking violence. Stars Robert De Niro, Jodie Foster, Cybill Shepherd, Harvey Keitel, Albert Brooks, Peter Boyle. The film was nominated for four Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Music, Best Male Actor, and won Scorsese the Palme d’Or at Cannes. In the film, we see banners for Palantine’s campaign, and Travis Bickle makes quite an impression wearing a campaign button on his fatigue jacket after shaving his hair into a Mohawk. Palantine is not to be confused with a Palantir, which is the magical scrying device from ‘The Lord of the Rings.’ He is also not to be confused with Senator Palpatine from the ‘Star Wars’ series, although Palpatine is supposedly named after the Taxi Driver character.
