The obverse depicts Jospeh Nyerere; President (and founding father) of Tanzania from the date of the country's foundation, in 1964, until his retirement, in 1985. He is considered one of the greatest historical figures of the Twentieth Century and one of the two most important personalities of modern Africa together with Nelson Mandela. Underneath Nyerere's head are the words: RAIS RA KWANZA (trans: THE FIRST PRESIDENT). The reverse depicts a prancing zebra.
