Original green boards with gilt title and decorations on front board and spine. Sunning to end papers. Top edge gilt, other edges deckle. Very good condition. Minor shelf wear, rubbing and bumping. Spine slightly faded. Edges dust dulled. First illustration has creases across the bottom edge. Old price in pencil on frontspiece. Text pages unmarked. Internally bright and clean. Sturdy, stored with protective clear Mylar cover. A very nice copy. Published 1913 by T.N. Foulis, London & Edinburgh. Mrs. S. C. Hall (1800-1881) was born Anna Maria Fielding in Dublin and left Ireland for England at the age of 15. She married Samuel Carter Hall and became a novelist and playwright. Erskine Nicol (1825-1904) lived and taught in Ireland from 1845-1850 at the height of the Irish famine. Many of his paintings portray the injustices inflicted upon the Irish people. Tales included: The Jaunting Car, The Bannow Postman, We’ll See About It, Beggars, Naturals, Kelly the Piper, Illustrations of Irish Pride, Lilly O’Brien, “Take it Easy,” Master Ben, and Moyna Brady.
