"Sydney Smith's Essays"-1874-Longmans, Green & Co London

Description: Offered is the antique book "Sydney Smith's Essays", published in London by Longmans, Green and Co. The book itself is not dated but there are extra pages in the back advertising other books by the same publisher and this is dated April, 1874 (see last photo). The book consists of well over 50 articles by the author (an English writer and wit who lived from 1771 to 1845) that were originally published in the Edinburgh Review in the early 1800s (see photos #3 & #4 for contents). This is an uncommon find; at the time of original listing I could find only one other 1874 edition for sale on eBay. The book is approx. 7 3/8" x 5 1/4" and contains 579 pages, including the index. There are also 32 additional pages in the back advertising other books by the same publisher. It is in fair to good condition. The burgundy hard cover has moderate wear, with fading on the spine and some blotchiness in places. The gold words on the spine are faded but still visible. Cracking is beginning inside both the front and the back covers. There are no endpapers in either the front or back; I don't know if there ever were or if they are missing. Otherwise, I see no missing or torn pages and almost all of the pages are well-attached to the binding, although the title page is slightly loose. The pages are slightly wavy. They have yellowed and have occasional light foxing but all the text is readable. A previous owner has written their name on the title page but otherwise I see only a few stray marks in the book. I have a lot of experience with vintage and antique books but am not an expert so please let me know if my description is missing information and you have additional questions.
