He then discusses primitive and popular forms; and there follow four chapters on satire in verse, in prose, in the novel and in the theatre. Each is historical, ranging from the beginnings of modern English literature to Shaw and Orwell. Due consideration is given to classical and medieval traditions, but the real core of the argument is an analysis of the great English satirists, their standpoint, style and method, with ample and enjoyable quotation. Dryden, Swift, and Pope are given most attention, but in each chapter Professor Sutherland touches on a number of authors and topics: Samuel Butler, the mock heroic, Cowper, Crabbe and Byron, the heritage of medieval preaching, the nature of irony, the influence of The Spectator, the other Butler, Beerbohm and Orwell, with sidelights on Fielding, Jane Austen, Peacock, Dickens and Thackeray. "Professor Sutherland gives a valuable unified account of the nature and resources of satire and the achievements of English satirists. He shows it to be a strong and natural native growth with a positive purpose, and capable of extraordinary triumphs of art." CONDITION: Very good condition overall, some ageing to covers and light shelf wear, mild bumping to corners, and US price on the cover is marked out with a black biro.
