Description: MAN OF STEEL (1986) #1-6: Published just a few months after Crisis on Infinite Earths, John Byrne's The Man of Steel updated the saga of Superman for modern audiences. His origin was altered, as were many other aspects of the character. The first issue reveals that Kal-El was conceived via the mingling of seeds in a matrix chamber, Clark's powers developed slowly over time (meaning Superboy was written out of continuity), and Superman's body projected an aura that protected his now vulnerable costume. Second issue has Lois Lane drives off a pier in order to get Superman's attention so she can interview him for The Daily Planet. In addition, Clark writes his first story for the Planet. Unlike the pre-Crisis Lois Lane, the revised Lois doesn't spend time trying to uncover Superman's secret identity (since no one knows he has a secret identity). The third issue finds Superman in Gotham City and at odds with the brutal (and oftentimes unlawful) methods Batman uses to fight crime. Issue #4, which finds Lois and Clark on a cruise that gets hijacked, establishes Lex Luthor as a scheming, power-mad business mogul who is jealous of Superman's increasingly felt presence in Metropolis. In issue #5, Lex Luthor scans Superman's cellular and molecular structure, enabling one of his scientists to create a being with strength and powers (and memories) almost equal to Superman. Final issue of the mini-serie we see that Clark Kent's parents are alive and well in Smallville (originally they had died shortly after Clark's graduation from high school), and Clark's childhood sweetheart Lana Lang is back in town. Clark learns that he is the sole survivor of Krypton (thus erasing Supergirl and others from continuity), but swears his allegiance to Earth. Written and drawn by John Byrne, with inks by Dick Giordano. THE WORLD OF METROPOLIS (1988) #1-4: 1 - Two of the most influential men in Superman's life...two men on the opposite ends of the scale of morality...two men who share a terrible secret just as they share their lives in the World of Metropolis. The first of these men is Perry White, hard-hitting editor of The Daily Planet, whose connection to the city his newspaper serves is as deep as his heart. The other is Lex Luthor, whose twisted genius and power have brought him to the pinnacle of power over Metropolis. Each has a dream for the city, one to see it grow into a safe and thriving place for its citizens, the other to hold it in his ruthless grasp. Discover what secret Perry White and Lex Luthor share...a secret that affects every man, woman and child who inhabit The World of Metropolis. Written by John Byrne, with art by Winslow Mortimer, Dick Giordano and Frank McLaughlin, The World of Metropolis will show you the way around one of the most fascinating cities in the world...and into the souls of two of its most intriguing citizens. 2- Lois Lane is sweet sixteen, maybe too sweet to stand up to the evil machinations of millionaire Lex Luthor or to convince Daily Planet editor Perry White to hire her as a reporter. 3 - "Mr. Kent Goes to Metropolis!" What was Clark Kent's life like before he decided to don the familiar red and blue uniform of Superman? 4 - Ever wonder what created the friendship between Superman and Jimmy Olsen? The tale is told here, including the origin of Jimmy's signal watch.
