Description: STORM OVER RANGELANDS Private Rights in Federal Lands Written by Wayne Hage and published by Free Enterprise Press, Bellevue, Washington. Copyright 1990; this is the second edition. The author has signed, dated (6 Dec, 90) and inscribed the book on the title page. You’ve probably heard of Cliven Bundy, the Nevada rancher who a few years ago led a ragtag bunch of self-styled militiamen in fending off federal agents who tried to confiscate his cows for grazing on public lands without permits. More recently his sons were arrested after taking over the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge near Burns, Oregon. What is going on? Is this some crazy anti-government Mormon inspired movement? The late Wayne Hage wrote this book over 25 years ago and it remains the best statement of this group of Westerners in relation to their conflict with the Federal Government. It is the only signed copy of the book I could find online. Wayne Hage (1936—2006) was a Nevada rancher who, with this book, became the intellectual leader of the group of ranchers who have been struggling with the federal government for many years over the use of public lands in the West. This so-called “Sagebrush Rebellion” argues that the federal government does not have the authority to manage the 250 million acres of land in the west and that such authority belongs to the states instead. Also, property rights advocates claim the government exercises a heavy hand in relations with those who make their livelihood off the land. People have died (LaVoy Finicum) and are going to prison over this issue. A decades-long legal battle centers on the Hage family's Pine Creek Ranch near Tonopah, Nevada. The government charged the Hage family, along with rancher Benjamin Colvin, with trespassing by grazing cattle without a permit on Bureau of Land Management and U.S. Forest Service land. Since 2006, the legal struggle has been carried on by Hage’s family and son Wayne N. Hage Jr. In 2012, U.S. District Judge Robert Clive Jones sided with Hage. He decided that the government had trampled the rancher’s rights — particularly his right to utilize water sources on federal land. More recently, on January 18th, 2016, the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled in favor of the federal government, remanding the case to a new federal judge because of apparent bias on the part of U.S. District Judge Jones. From the dust jacket description: “Range war! Here and now! No, it’s not the Old West. It’s not the clash f cattlemen against sheep herders or ranchers against sodbusters in time warp. It’s ;today’s headlines about Congress threatening to increase stiff grazing fees ranchers already pay on federal land in the eleven western states. It’s Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management bureaucrats sharply curtailing razing permits to broaden their regulatory powers. It’s Public Broadcasting System television specials about environmentalists accusing ranchers of overgrazing, and pressing to eliminate the livestock industry from federal lands with slogans such as ‘Livestock-Free By 93!’ It’s this and a thousand battles more that the news doesn’t cover, all boding devastation for America’s livestock industry—and for every other resource extraction industry int he nation, from minerals and timber to fisheries and petroleum. This the fallout from this storm over rangelands is confined neither to the range nor to the West. The political and economic destiny of all Americans is unalterably hitched to this multi-faceted strife.” DESCRIPTION: 265 pages 9 1/4 x 6 1/4 inches Signed second edition, hardcover with dustjacket CONDITION: This hard-cover book is in fine condition with a very good dustjacket.
