Description: Wow! What a find in a jewelry box! Last year I bought a big box of jewelry and it actually wasn’t even a jewelry box. It was a box for a silver plated flatware, but it was full of jewelry and other odds and ends. I put it in my house, put it somewhere and other things ended up on top of it , and I never looked at it again until last night when I started going through it and found so many cool and unusual items, including this item which I had to use the Google app because I had no idea what it was! I found out that it is known as a Boatswain whistle or Bosun’s call pipe or whistle. So, I blew the whistle and the sound is nice and clear! Of course, I showed it to my husband, and he knew what it was right away! Smarty pants that he is!This piece is quite old. I saw them online going back to the Civil War era and most of them are World War II era from the 40s, so that is my assumption. I was also surprised to see that people were selling them and saying that they were sterling because it doesn’t really look like Sterling it’s so worn, and it has scratches and dents on it and even a little spot of rust Where it was molded or welded together to form it. So maybe it is sterling overlay because it is definitely marked Sterling!! See my picture where I’m pointing it out so see all of the pictures and ask any questions. You now know what it is and it does work so it’s a great piece of history. My father was in the Navy if he was still alive, I would give it to him, but he’s long gone. , thank you for looking.
