Description description Wilderness Welcome color_lens In 1990, Stephen Lyman painted his now famous Evening Light, a rustic windowsill filled with treasures from hiking in the wilderness, lit by a candle, and overlooking Oregon's Wallowa mountain range. Shortly after, Lyman began to wonder what that winter scene might look like from the outside looking in. What vision of warmth and welcome might the cabin project to a cold, weary traveler headed home? Thus, he painted Wilderness Welcome. "I like to show people what's beyond the borders of a painting I've already done – to investigate another area of a scene that I've already let them experience. So, the natural extension of Evening Light was to show the exterior of the cabin, as if you were coming back to a nice, warm, cozy cabin at sunset. "The logs of a log cabin bear textures that I really enjoy seeing and painting, particularly in a cabin that's been out in the wilderness, high in the mountains. There is a lot of exposure; and there hasn't been anything done to protect the wood from cracking, or peeling, or splitting. The outside of the cabin gets a lot of texture. "I structured Wilderness Welcome to invite the viewer into the cabin. I purposely designed this to be the cabin that you are coming to make a home in. The lantern on the porch captures and reflects the light of the candle in the window, both of which welcome you to a nice, warm, cozy cabin at sunset. I wanted to make it a refuge, a shelter for when the night gets really cold. Most importantly, I designed this cabin to be yours. It's not someone else's cabin that you're passing by. It's the one that you are coming to make a home in."– Stephen Lyman Artist Biography account_box About the Artist color_lens Stephen Lyman was born on August 16, 1957 in Enid, Oklahoma; but grew up in Lewiston, Idaho. He was an avid explorer and magnificent wildlife and wilderness painter who specialized in painting the most elusive moments in nature. His love of the great outdoors stemmed from a childhood spent in the Pacific Northwest where hiking in Snake River country was a regular family ritual. Although Lyman's desire to share his admiration for the outdoors was strong, he decided to enroll in the Art Center School of Design in Pasadena, California to learn more about the commercial art field. Despite starting his career as a commercial illustrator in Los Angeles, Lyman soon realized that the call of the wild was stronger than the lure of the city. So, he returned to his native state of Idaho where he spent two years exploring and developing his own style of painting while living a natural lifestyle and continuing to discover the wonders of the natural world. Preferring a camera and his own keen senses for his field work, Lyman confined his sketching and painting solely to his studio. Stephen's breathtaking artwork was inspired, in turn, by the writing and teachings of famous naturalist John Muir. Lyman called the great naturalist his inspiration; and said, "In Muir, I have found a true friend." In fact, Lyman and his wife named their first son, Muir, after him. "All of my paintings have their origins in my experience and perception of beauty in the wilderness. I frequently go backpacking, and as soon as possible, get off the trail and on top of the mountain. 'Climb the mountains, and get good tidings,' John Muir said. I know exactly what he meant," said Lyman. Stephen's first limited edition print was published by The Greenwich Workshop in 1983. In subsequent years, he was a frequent participant in the prestigious international "Birds in Art" show at the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum. He was invited to be "Artist of the Year" at the 1991 Pacific Rim Wildlife Art Show, and then received the rare honor of being invited back as an "Encore Artist" at the 1995 event. Stephen Lyman actively shared the wonder of the natural world with a legion of collectors during his art career. He was named one of the top artists in the country by U.S. Art magazine; and his book, Into the Wilderness: An Artist's Journey, was published to unanimous acclaim in the autumn of 1995 with over 50,000 copies sold. Through Lyman's art, you can travel into a wilderness very few have experienced. His penchant for detail compels the viewer to study his work, search it out, and enjoy each subtlety. You can share the sensation of being in the true outdoors – exploring, discovering, studying, and enjoying the all-encompassing beauty of unspoiled nature. Fellow artist Bev Doolittle said the following about Stephen Lyman: "He paints the wilderness with a knowledge and genuineness that can only be expressed by someone who has 'been there'." "At night, after my flickering campfire has subsided to glowing coals, I climb upon a rock to listen to the earth, moon, and stars. I listen, not expecting to hear anything; but in awe of creation, becoming part of the sacred silence. This feeling carries over into my art. I want to show that the surrounding environment is as important a subject as the animal or bird in it, said Lyman. Sadly, Stephen Lyman passed away on April 22, 1996 at the age of 38 after falling off a cliff while hiking and doing research for a painting in the Cathedral Rocks area of Yosemite National Park – a place Stephen often went to get inspiration for his wilderness paintings. He is survived by his wife, Andrea Lyman and two sons, Muir and Jarre. Payment Information payment PayPal, Credit Cards, & Sales Tax color_lens We accept PayPal as our main form of payment.
