Porcelain Works (Kaiserliche & königliche Porzellanwerke), HAND PAINTED SATIN with GOLD Accents on Flowers & Embossing, circa 1859-1894 DESCRIPTION: The artwork on this is beautiful with the gold outlining on the large satin floral sprays. On the front of the right handed pitcher, there is a beautiful floral display with 3 large sprays that have gold outlining even on the green leaves and brown stems . The embossing is around the bottom, on the handle and outlining the rim. It was typical for Victorians not to paint the gold on the back, but the simple floral spray on the back does have gold outlining as does the handle! The leaves are tastefully colored in multiple greens, blue and light greys giving a depth effect. The fancy handle was painted a light purple color then painted gold. Therefore the color that shows through the worn gold is light purple. The artist who designed this pitcher was obviously very talented as was expected for Victoria decorators. CONDITION: The condition of this pitcher is excellent. We can find no defects or damage. The only (age appropriate) gold wear is on the handle. Consult the photos. There are no chips, nicks, cracks, or hairlines. Otherwise, the gold appears to be in excellent shape. See the photos to judge its beauty for yourself. As collectors ourselves, we tend to be very picky. DIMENSIONS: This stands 8 7/8" high to the top of the spout. The maximum diameter is 5 1/2". The capacity is 42 ounces. HISTORY/MARKS: Alfred Stellmacher began working at the Imperial & Royal Porcelain Works in Vienna. He opened his own factory in 1859, in Turn-Teplitz calling it Kaiserliche & königliche Porzellanwerke which translates to Imperial & Royal Porcelain Works. During the 1870’s, Stellmacher developed a new ceramic material which became known as ivory porcelain due to its soft yellowish shade and matte finish. The new material allowed the ceramist to create more complex modeling and detailing of shapes and applied designs. In 1894, Ernst Wahliss (age 58) took over the Alfred Stellmacher factory. The factory was renamed Ernst Wahliss Kunst, Porzellan und Fayence Fabrik. His Vienna store which sold porcelain and ceramic wares was established in 1863. Ernst died in 1900. Two years later his sons, Hans and Erich, bought 600 moulds from the Imperial and Royal Porcelain Manufactory in Vienna. Using these moulds they started making reproductions of Vienna porcelain. In 1905, the company was renamed as Alexandra Porcelain Works Ernst Wahliss. In 1907 the factory was acquired by Gerhard Martin Wahliss. In 1910, the factory focused on production of faience. The factory temporarily closed during World War I. In 1921 it became part of Porzellanfabrik Union AG and in 1929 production ended. Meanwhile by 1892 Alfred Stellmacher had encouraged his son, Eduard Stellmacher, and sons-in-law to establish a porcelain manufactory, called Riessner, Stellmacher & Kessel or The Amphora Porcelain Works. The firm consistently marked pieces with the word Amphora and became known by that name. They used a variety of marks with the word Amphora, a red 'R.St.K' mark, or the initials 'RS&K'. The works were also signed 'Made in Austria'. Thanks to skilled designers like Eduard Stellmacher, Paul Dachsel and a host of decorators from the Fachschule of Teplitz, Amphora quickly developed a unique genre of Art Nouveau ceramics.
