St Germaine Cousins was a 16th century woman who was born with a deformed and paralyzed hand. Her stepmother hated her and she was subjected to terrible abuses and neglect. She was given so little food that as a baby she learned to crawl so she could get to the dog's dish. Her father ignored his wife's cruelty even when she poured boiling water on Germaine's legs. She developed a form of tuberculosis that caused her neck glands to swell and left her susceptible to infectious diseases. Her half-siblings were unsympathetic and also cruel. Germaine was made to sleep in the barn and was put to work herding the sheep. Germaine was given no education and learned her faith through the catechism, and she developed a simple faith in God who became her friend. She went to Mass daily and prayed her rosary made of simple knots in cord. Local children began to gather to hear her stories of God. She even forgave her mother for the life of abuse she suffered. Once her stepmother discovered she had let a beggar sleep in the barn during the winter. Looking at a bundle Germaine held, she accused the girl of stealing bread from the kitchen, but when Germaine opened the bundle, out fell beautiful flowers which would not usually be seen for months. Germaine handed her mother one of the flowers and said "Please accept this flower, Mother. God sends it to you in sign of his forgiveness." The whole village began to speak about this holy child and the stepmother softened toward her and invited her back in the house, but Germaine was used to the straw and animals and continued to sleep in the barn. There she was found dead at the age of 22, worn out by a life of hardship and illness. Forty years later she was exhumed and found to be incorrupt. People remembered the young woman's holy life of suffering. Miracles occurred through her intercession which led to her canonization. She is the patron saint of abandoned people, disabled people, child abuse victims, country girls, shepherdesses, orphans, unattractive people, poverty and illness. The prayer cards which come with our rosaries, medals and pictures are home-made, created using a "greeting card" program on a computer and printed in full color on nice quality paper. Although they are not like the usual smaller professionally printed prayer cards, most of our customers prefer them since they are like a pamphlet with 4 "pages" and several images, prayers, patronages and often other information about the saint or Catholic devotion.
