Description: FRESH LIVE SPANISH MOSS 10 lbs FOR CRAFTS, FLOWER ARANGEMENTS OR GROWING IT IN YOUR TREES PICKED THE DAY YOU BUY IT !!! NO SALES OR SHIPPING TO CALIFORNIA!!! Contact CA. Agricultural Dept for their reasons for this Up for sale (except in the state of CA.) is a 10 lb box of fresh picked LIVE Spanish Moss from the Valrico Florida area. Moss is an Air Plant and native to Florida. It thrives down hear because of the humid weather. Being an air plant it gets it's water from the air. Please be aware that California will not allow this to be shipped to their state so there are NO SALES OR SHIPPING TO CALIFORNIA. If you live in Ca. and purchase this I will refund you money right away but I CAN NOT SHIP TO YOUR STATE. If you need to know the reasons please contact your states aggricultural dept. Please click on the Shipping & Payment tab to calculate your shipping cost. I will be quite generous with the moss. It will be no less than 10lbs but most likely will have an extra l LB. Trust me, you will be impressed with how much moss 10+ lbs is!!! I have 1.5 acers and many of the Pecan and Oak trees have the Spainish Moss in them and I am willing to pick the moss from the trees and ship them to you for your craft or floral arrangement needs. You can also try to grow it in your trees since it is LIVE MOSS. I have seen what they charge in the craft stores for moss....never quite understood such high prices for something I have all over my trees. However, I do live in FL where moss is abundant....at least in my yard. What to expect upon arrival: This is raw natural live Spanish Moss. It is not the same as the treated and clean moss that you see in the craft stores. There may be twigs, leaves or debris entangled in this moss. I try to remove as much of this as I can but it is raw live moss harvested from trees. It is not treated in any way so occasionally you may find a bug or two. I send the moss misted so that it endures the shipment but it is EXTREAMLY IMPORTANT that you REMOVE THE LIVE PLANT from the box upon arrival. Some of the moss may appear gray while the moist parts will still be green in color. I would suggest spreading the moss out on an outdoor surface and misting the plants with water to revive them after being boxed up for shipping. Some parts of the plant turn black or yellow. These parts are dead. Every effort is made to remove all dead areas from your order but it is impossible to remove every strand that has turned. If the moss is allowed to sit in the box unopened it will mold up on itself as any damp item would which is why it is important to remove it ASAP. I have sold over 10 tons of moss over the past 15 years and 99.9% of my customers are satisfied but every once in a while I get a customer expecting craft store, treated moss. THIS IS NOT THAT. Please expect any and all of what has been mentioned above when ordering. Florida Forest Plants Spanish-moss (Tillandsia usneoides) Spanish-moss, also called Florida moss, long moss, or graybeard, is not a true moss. It is an epiphytic plant, which grows on another plant, but does not rely on the host plant for nutrients; epiphytes make their own food. They are sometimes referred to as air plants because most have aerial roots; however, Spanish-moss does not have any roots. It uses its long, thin, scaly stems to wrap around the host tree and hang down from the branches. The leaves are covered with cup-like, permeable scales that 'catch' moisture and nutrients from the air and from pockets on the surface of the host. This water-trapping ability allows Spanish-moss to withstand long dry periods. In extreme dry spells, the plant becomes dormant until moisture returns. While the plant is not parasitic, it can sometimes damage the host tree by over-shading the leaves, thus reducing photosynthesis, or by weighing down and breaking the branches. The plants have very tiny seeds that are dispersed by wind and birds. Birds may also carry off small fragments that easily reproduce new plants. Spanish-moss was harvested for years as a stuffing material in automobile seats, furniture, and mattresses. The moss-stuffed mattresses were said to be cooler and more comfortable due to the natural insulating properties of the plant. This was especially important in pre-air-conditioning days. Moss pickers were hired and used long poles to pull the stringy masses off the trees. The plants were then dried and cured before being used. Today, the stems are used occasionally in upholstery and as a packing material. Spanish-moss is a popular mulch and is widely used in the floral industry. Many floral arrangements use Spanish moss around the plant base to hold in moisture. It is also seen in certain types of Cajun architecture as insulation and it is sometimes draped along fences or wires to provide privacy screening in backyards. Several species of songbirds use the plant material for nest building or weave their nests in the moss clumps. Warblers are especially fond of these sites, as are bats. Many reptiles and amphibians hide inside the thick masses. Redbugs, or chiggers, are also common residents in Spanish-moss on the ground and may cause an unpleasant, itching rash on the skin if the plants are handled. Spanish-moss is limited to Central and South America and the southeastern United States, from Florida to Texas. Spanish moss (Tillandsia usneoides) closely resembles its namesake (Usnea, or beard lichen). However, Spanish moss is not biologically related to either mosses or lichens. Instead, it is a flowering plant in the family Bromeliaceae (the bromeliads) that grows hanging from tree branches in full sun or partial shade. Formerly this plant has been placed in the genera Anoplophytum,Caraguata and Renealmia.[1] It ranges from the southeastern United States (southern Virginia and eastern Maryland) to Argentina, growing wherever the climate is warm enough and has a relatively high average humidity. The plant consists of a slender stem bearing alternate thin, curved or curly, heavily scaled leaves 2–6 cm long and 1 mm broad, that grow vegetatively in chain-like fashion (pendant) to form hanging structures 1–2 m in length, occasionally more. The plant has aerial roots and its flowers are tiny and inconspicuous. It propagates both by seed and vegetatively by fragments that blow on the wind and stick to tree limbs, or are carried by birds as nesting material.
