Description: This is a beautiful and original period silk sailors hat/cap tally named to the USS San Francisco. It is in unissued condition, never sewn and is uncut. It measures 37 inches long and 1 1/2 inches wide and is the early gold bullion tinsel variety. It shows some toning to the bullion but presents very nicely. This tally came from the estate sale of a collector who collected in the 1960's and 70's. His collection was solely US Navy and centered ion the Spanish American War, and Great White fleet era. This piece is guaranteed 100% original and of the period. The USS San Francisco was launched in 1889 as a protected Cruiser and she was best known for her role under Admiral Sampson serving in Cuban waters in the Spanish American War. Her personnel were authorized to receive a named Sampson medal with this ship on the bar. This tally would make an outstanding addition to a Sampson medal display with one of these named medals. This is a rare opportunity to acquire an original tally named to this ship. This ship had a very long service life, into the 1930's with lots of history serving in the Atlantic, Pacific and Mediterranean. She saw service also as a mine layer and submarine patrols on our East Coast and in England in WWI. I will be selling a large amount of US Navy material, all WWII and older over the next few weeks.
