Laid down in 1972 and completed in 1978, Minsk was the second carrier of the Kiev class (“Heavy Antisubmarine Cruiser” or “Tactical Aircraft Carrying Cruiser” according to Soviet designation). It carried 25 aircraft including several vertical takeoff and landing fighters and a number of helicopters.
