Description: SOLZHENITSYN, Aleksandr, Один день Ивана Денисовича [One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich] in Novyi Mir, XXXVIII, No. 11, Moscow, November 1962. TP/Contents + [3] - 288. Octavo. FIRST EDITION. This is the first appearance of Solzhenitsyn’s famous tale of Soviet labor camp prisoner Ivan Denisovich Shukhov. Set in the 1950s, the story of this single day was first published on pages 8 - 74, with a preface by Aleksandr Tvardovsky, in November 1962 in the Soviet literary magazine Novyi Mir (New World). One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich engages with questions both theological and philosophical as well as historical and political. It stands as one of the most important literary texts of the 20th century revealing the horrors of the labor camps as well as the resilient and enduring nature of the human spirit. Because of this work Solzhenitsyn was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature (1970), but he was also exiled from the Soviet Union in 1974..In his short autobiography Solzhenitsyn later wrote: "During all the years until 1961, not only was I convinced that I should never see a single line of mine in print in my lifetime, but, also, I scarcely dared allow any of my acquaintances to read anything I had written because I feared that this would become known." Finally, at the age of 42, Solzhenitsyn dared to approach the editor of the Soviet "Noviy Mir" magazine. The work caused immediate sensation in both the West and the Soviet Union;-both because of its controversial realism and the fact that it was the first piece of Soviet literature on a dangerous political subject since the 1920s. Because of the book Solzhenitsyn became somewhat of a hero in the West. CONDITION: Very good in original printed wrappers.
