Solar Powered Water Systems For solar powered water pumping, the solar array can be hooked directly to the water pump without a battery bank. The water source can be a well, stream, or pond. The water is usually stored in a water tank. If the water tank is located higher than where the water is used, normal water pressure is maintained even at night (see Figure 23). In some applications, a second pump and pressure tank are used to maintain water pressure. In this case a battery bank is used to run the second pump when the solar power is unavailable.
