These devices are availablewith capacitance values from 0.8 to 1000 pF and are useful from VHF to millimeter wavebands. Skyworks family of MIS chip capacitors utilizes Skyworks’ well established silicontechnology and tightly controlled wafer processing to produce capacitors with excellentinsertion loss and consistent capacitance.The MIS chip capacitor is typically utilized as a DC block in series with a pair of RFtransmission lines, such as microstrip or coplanar waveguide, or in shunt as an RF bypasscapacitor. In both cases, the very low RF insertion loss and very high self-resonantfrequencies of these capacitors make them nearly ideal components.ApplicationsChip capacitors are typically utilized as DC blocks or as RF bypass components in hybridcircuits. In the diagram of a single pole, double throw switch (see page 2), capacitors C1and C4 are DC blocks that prevent the DC voltages that are present across the PIN diodesD1 and D2 from affecting the operation of the external circuit, as well as preventing anyDC voltage or current that is developed in the external circuit from interfering with theoperation of the switch.
