Description: SIX PLAYS The Police, The Martyrdom of Peter Ohey, Out at Sea, Charlie, The Party, Enchanted Night Mrozek is the most important figure in the post-war surge of Polish theatrical talent. He belongs to the same generation as Arnold Wesker, John Osborne and Harold Pinter, and is a leading writer in the Polish Theatre of the Absurd. His first successful book was The Ele-phant, a collection of short stories which was awarded the annual literary prize for 1957 by the Polish State Cultural Review. His first play, The Police, was performed in 1958. The opening of his first full-length play, Tango, in Warsaw in July 1965 was the greatest event in Polish post-war theatre, and its performance in Germany provoked reviews of exceptional length and enthusiasm. The play was chosen to open the Royal Shakespeare Company's summer season at the Aldwych Theatre in June 1966. Mrozek's works have been translated into almost every European language, as well as into Russian and Persian, and have been performed frequently outside Poland.
