Weight: ~ 16.4 gramDiameter: ~ 31 mm Mostis appears to have been King of the Caeni (Καινοί) who inhabited the northern littoral of the Propontis between Bisanthe, a Samian colony, and Perinthos. The dating of his coins in the last quarter of the 2nd and the early 1st c. BC is based on the historical events in Thrace and the Propontis in that period of time. After the end of the Kingdom of Pergamon 133 BC the Romans allocated the Thracian Chersonesos and the Thracian coast to the province of Macedonia. However, they were not able to attain complete control of the region. Although several tribes from the western parts of Thrace were allies to Rome, a large portion of the thracians supported Mithradates VI of Pontos. Only after the victory of Sullas over Mithridates 86 BC did the Romans subdue Thrace completely. The reign of Mostis lies very probably in the period from 133 to 86 BC. The regnal years on his tetradrachms indicate that it lasted at least 38 years. About 4,000 years ago the lands of modern Bulgaria were inhabited by people who built fortifications and cities, buried their dead in monumental tombs, drank wine from gold and silver cups, and warred, traded and did politics with the ancient Greeks and Romans, with the Persians, the Scythians and the ancient Macedonians. These people were the Thracians. Today their name is barely known to anyone outside Europe, the life of the Thracians remains more or less a mystery. Many were already Romanised during the Roman era, a significant portion of Thrace was incorporated into a new state, Bulgaria. What had left of the Thracians mixed with the newcomers, the Slavs and the Bulgarians. The existence of the Thracians was all but forgotten in the Middle Ages and during the Ottoman rule, but since the 19th Century archaeology and history have discovered more and interesting parts of this ancient people's heritage. The tetradrachm (Greek: τετράδραχμον, translit. tetrádrachmon) was a large silver coin that originated in Ancient Greece. It was nominally equivalent to four drachmae, worth four times a man's daily wage for a skilled labourer or for a hoplite soldier, or two days' pay for a sculptor working on a public building. Over time the tetradrachm effectively became the standard coin of the Antiquity, spreading well beyond the borders of the Greek World. The images on early Greek coins give us a lot of information about Ancient Greek life and culture. For exampleimages of sacred and important buildings and temples, show us what their buildings looked like thousands ofyears ago. Coins were not just money, but propaganda or a means of communicating civic pride. Coins arevaluable, durable and pass through many hands.
