In the 1950s and 60s she began working in collage, perhaps her best work. Born in San Diego in 1899, her father, Luther Fanton, was also an artist. Gilchrist studied at Pamona College and San Diego State University under Millard Sheets and George Post. Inspired by the artistic atmosphere of the time, she was part of a group of California artists defined by the energetic development of visual and pictorial art. The 1920s and 30s was an era of experimentation, with artists delving into ideas surrounding Post-Impressionism, Expressionism and Abstraction. Gilchrist was a lifelong resident of her native city (San Diego). She died there on July 20, 1986.
