Description: This listing is for stunning etching by Ernest Christian Rost of “Elmwood” the home in Cambridge, Massachusetts, built by the Lowell family including Thomas Oliver (1734–1815), royal Lieutenant Governor of Massachusetts; Elbridge Gerry (1744–1814), signer of the US Declaration of Independence, Vice President of the United States and eponym of the term "gerrymandering"; and James Russell Lowell (1819–1891), noted American writer, poet, and foreign diplomat. The historic home is a centerpiece of the National Historic Landmark District in Cambridge and eventually the home was bequeathed to Harvard University by a Lowell descendent, who was a Chair of Harvard’s Art History Department. On the left side, under the image of the etching is an open book. The center under the etching image says, “Elmwood, The Home of James Russell Lowell.” The right side, under the image of the etching is the signature of the artist in pencil, “Ernest Rost.” Rost was born in 1866 in Mt. Vernon, NY, and was a successful 19th and 20th century painter, etcher, and photographer. By his late teens, several of Ernest Christian Rost's paintings, in the form of oil landscapes, were on display at the National Academy of Design. However, by the 1890s he shifted completely to etching as his primary artwork focus. Many of his etchings created between 1891 and 1896 are held at the Library of Congress. Most of Rost's landscape paintings for sale depict rural landscapes throughout New York, but they also featured people, animals, and homes of notable individuals of the era, such as this listing. Following the start of the Spanish-American War, Rost was sent to Panama, Puerto Rico, and other countries to photograph for the U.S. War Department. The frame appears to be the original, has clear glass and is backed with brown paper.
