Description: 1836 Report Relating to Capital Punishment, Massachusetts House Document No. 32. Softcover, 94 pages, removed from a bound volume, some light foxing, some notes and marginalia throughout. Very scarce report of one of the earliest attempts to abolish the death penalty in the United States, spearheaded by anti-Capital Punishment activist Robert Rantoul. Rantoul has inscribed this report on the title page: "Rev. J. L. Stevens / with respects of his / Obedt. Servt. / Robt Rantou[l]." The l in Rantoul is cut off because the volume was presumably trimmed. Very scarce, no copies currently available for sale. Great piece of Massachusetts history.
